Tips For Creating a Prayer Board

On a recent book club session, my homegirl mentioned doing a prayer board for 2025. I'm not ashamed to say I jumped at the idea. While I don't do New Year's resolutions, I DO spend dedicated time with the Lord every January to understand what He wants me to focus on for the year.

Creating my prayer board had to be visually interesting for me to hang it on my wall.

My homegirl and I got on a Zoom call and chatted about life while creating our boards. Little did I know it would be exactly what I needed to reinvigorate my excitement for the year and increase my faith in how God can show up BIG!

Although creating a prayer board isn't necessary to see God move in your life this year, it can be a meaningful way to focus your prayers, track answered prayers, and encourage consistent communication with God. Here are some tips to start with.

Step 1: Get Your Prayer Board Materials

The goal should be to create something you want to display in your home, so that you have a constant reminder of it. Grab items that make your board fit in with your record and vibe, and that tap into your creative spirit.

Items can include:

I got my prayer board supplies from Target.

Step 2: Choose A Purpose For Your Board

A prayer board is much different than a vision board. A vision board focuses on "manifesting" the things you want to happen, while a prayer board focuses on increasing your faith for God's perfect will for your life. Instead of focusing on what things you want to happen, focus on trusting and leaning on the Lord to bring His perfect blessings for your life to pass.

At the end of the day, whatever you desire this board to achieve is completely up to you, but understand you cannot MAKE anything happen that is BOTH good, perfect, and sustainable — only God does (James 1:17). Trying to be him leads to frustration, anxiety. and depression throughout the year.

Instead, I suggest focusing on the promises of God found in His Word. This will remind you that someone better is in control. And when He shows up, he do es so exceedingly, abundantly, above all that you can ask or think (Ephesians 3:20). Plus, the blessings of the Lord enriches, AND are free of sorrow (Proverbs 10:22)!

Step 3: Choose The Categories of Your Prayer Board

I created my board based on the categories of my life that I wanted God to move in this year. Even before my homegirl presented the idea of a prayer board, I had four categories to channel my faith into: relationships/family, healing/health, finances, purpose/career.

Here are some questions to ask yourself to find categories of your own:

  1. What areas of your life are underperforming in God's goodness and glory?

  2. What areas do you need guidance and direction?

  3. What areas of your life stay on your brain — a LOT!

  4. What areas of your life will require a lot of your attention/devotion this year?

  5. What are you believing for the loved ones in your life?

Step 4: Choose The Supporting Scriptures For Your Prayer Board

Once you've gotten your categories. Search the scriptures for verses that speak to God's promises in those areas. Create a list for each category, organized from least to greatest based on relevance.

Your prayer board should be based on the promises of God, found in scripture.

Step 5: Layout and Design Your Board!

Decorate the board to make it visually appealing and inspiring — but also quickly digestible for your active prayer time. Use dividers (string, tape, or sections) to define categories. Add titles or labels for each section. Write prayers and scriptures on sticky notes, index cards, or pieces of paper and attached them to the relevant sections of the board. You can even use different colors or symbols to represent types of prayers (e.g., personal, family, community).

Remember, the most important part of your prayer board is REVISITING IT!

This should be an active tool in your home for you to engage with and update as necessary. Dedicate a section for updates, reflections, or answers to prayer, and regularly update this section to celebrate growth and God’s responses. Hang it somewhere prominent in your home. Pray over the board often, committing all the requests to God. You may even consider pairing it with a journal to document deeper reflections.

If you try creating a prayer board, let me know if any of these tips help! Praying your prayers are faith-filled and speedily answered this year!
